Society Seeks Applications for Executive Vice President

On behalf of the Board of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Nominating Committee is accepting applications for the position of Executive Vice President.

  • A slate of candidates selected by the Committee from the pool of applicants will be submitted to the Board for election in December 2023.

  • The elected candidate will serve a one-year term beginning in January, 2024.

Dues-paid members of the Barbershop Harmony Society are welcome to apply for the position by submitting a letter of interest and resume with professional and barbershop-related information. The letter must contain the names and contact information of three references; references shall not be current members of the Society Board. Additional skills, experience and requirements associated with the position of EVP are included below, including links to official Society documentation.

Skills and Experience of an Executive Vice President

The BHS Board of Directors is a volunteer, non-compensated assembly of leaders who provide policy, procedures, guidance and direction to the BHS CEO, staff and constituencies of the organization.

The job description of the EVP is part of the Board Policy Manual (2017), and is (indirectly) delegated in the Society Bylaws. Both provide additional context and requirements in the immediate search process.

Position Requirements and Desired Characteristics

Mandatory Requirements

  • Experience serving on a governance board of directors

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including discretion and diplomacy in meetings

  • Deep understanding of the programs of BHS

  • Commitment to the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) goals of BHS, specifically but not limited to the Everyone in Harmony Strategic vision (EIH)

  • General understanding of organizational financial issues

  • Willing and available to work between 5 and 10 hours per week on BHS Board business

  • Willing to make a potential five- to six-year commitment to the board
    • 1 to 2 years as Executive Vice President2 years as Society President (if elected)

    • 2 years as Immediate Past President

  • Experience implementing large and small projects

  • Experience leading and motivating teams of volunteers with a variety of skills

Soft Requirements

  • Understanding of, and participation in strategic planning

  • Ability to recruit and interview potential board and committee members

Desirable Characteristics

  • Board experience at the chapter and district levels

  • Service on at least one Society-level committee, preferably as chair

  • Professional experience in training, specifically with volunteers
